Technology Adoption
Technology adoption is the process through which individuals and organizations move from first encountering a new technology to using it consistently and effectively in their daily work. Understanding how adoption unfolds helps IT, L&D, and operations leaders reduce resistance, cut support costs, and get real value from software investments faster. Without a deliberate approach, even well-chosen tools sit underused.
Technology adoption is the process by which people progress from initial awareness of a tool to confident, routine use. Researchers have mapped this journey in frameworks such as the technology adoption model (TAM), which focuses on perceived usefulness and ease of use as the two forces that most reliably predict whether someone will embrace a new system. TAM remains a practical diagnostic: when employees find a tool hard to use or unclear in its benefit, adoption stalls regardless of how capable the software is.
The technology adoption lifecycle, sometimes called the technology adoption life cycle, describes the broader population-level pattern. Everett Rogers originally identified five adopter groups, and the resulting technology adoption curve, or technology adoption curves when comparing multiple rollouts, sorts users into innovators, early adopters, early majority, late majority, and laggards. A technology adoption graph plotting these groups over time produces the familiar S-curve shape: slow initial uptake, a steep climb as the majority joins, then a long plateau. The technology adoption cycle repeats with each new tool, which is why organizations rolling out software every few years face the same resistance patterns again and again.
Practical adoption work happens in the day-to-day moments when an employee opens an application and either knows what to do or does not.
